Ikaria is a weird island. It is located in a busy sea, but there is almost nobody that visits the island. The local people are tending goats, fish for personal use, make a wine that no one dares to export and wander around the deserted streets a bit. The unfortunate history of the island – Icarus flew too close to the sun and plunged into the sea – seems to still have the islanders in a hold.

What is this about?
Edwin Severijn Arnout Krediet are friends from Utrecht. They know each other from top restaurant-l’y Sot-laisse and sail around regularly. The roles are always equally distributed; Skipper and ex-dishwasher Arnout is the man of the water, cookmate and chef Edwin the man of what swims around in it.

Unije is a small island in the Adriatic Sea. The clandestine feeling that lurks throughout former Yugoslavia, is strongly felt in this place. You can obviously cheat here. This is a breeding ground for very independent entrepreneurs.

On the bench in front of his appartment at the beach Manuel is not doing much. Merce might come. And maybe Laura and Pep. “What do people mean by ‘best’ wishes?” Manuel does not understand. He does not understand that people wish new things for a new year, better things. nor that they make up ‘good intentions’ that are only valid for a year. A better person and a better life for one year? It seems rather pointless. People don’t even like to change!
Why not wish for more of the same? Manuel thinks. “I would like to kiss Merce for another year. My mother cooks delicious. Pep is a good friend. Iniesta and Messi still play for us. Merce. I would want Merce for another year! ” He feels comfortably voluminous. Like a bucket of water thrown into the sea, and all droplets could be spread around the world. He feels like the sea. He wants to be the sea for another year.
He spots Merce on the beach. He wants to hide quickly to watch her looking for him. But he is too late. She already smiles at him. He gathers all his drops from throughout the world. Runs to her and tackels her in the sand. She smells wonderful. Like grass and lime and like the sea.

What we now see is a piece of military science by Jorge.
He went swimming later today. He called his friends he wouldn’t come. Because he didn’t feel strong enough. His friends do not know he swims later.
Slowly, he descents the swimming ladder. This is always a bummer: the faster you go, the faster you’re adapted. Since “fast” no longer exists, it has become an ordeal. He shudders.Every pore has to cool down by itself. Feet, ankles, legs, buttocks (his penis is never a problem), abdomen. Up from there it’s not too bad. He carefully steps from the ladder onto the underwater edge. His chest stays dry.
Now it begins. The wizardry of an indestructible warrior: he has discovered a gray area in between giving up and hanging on.
He checks the clock. ‘9.25, allright, go.” Jorge doesn’t push off. He just starts to walk. Step by step. On the underwater edge. His fingers grabbed behind the ridge around the pool. He wades through the water. Jorge walks all the way to the other side! And back. And forth. And back. Three times. Checks the clock. ‘9.50, allright, good. “

It is 23 November when Hanuman sets sail towards ‘the Americas’. Onions, potatoes, oranges, green tomatoes and cabbages are piled up from bilge to deck. For 65 cents a piece we bought cartons of wine, because they stack easily behind the bench. Our most notable purchase however is shopping bag full of garlic. Enough for a whole year. For a midsized hotel, that is. I wonder why Captain Mike overdid it. “It contains a lot of vitamins,” he says cheerfully, “and besides, I’m loving it!”

With high expectations, I purchased fish gear at the fishstore in Utrecht. Half a year of sailing the Mediterranean Sea: I’m gonna fish! The colorful device is attached to the railing with two hose clamps. Let the tuna come!
